Black Cat Goes to Pieces

Another week had passed, and it was time to get back into the job of tearing down Black Cat. It was a full day, but we got the motor off and stripped down to a bare block, pulled the throwout bearing, hydraulic system, seat, and started to get to work on the pedals.

Here's the end result of last week's work; radiator bolster draining and awaiting final disassembly.

Look at all that junk in there!

Pulled the front cover off, leaving the gears exposed.

Pulled the motor off, and got it over to the work bench.

Got the pistons, crank, cam, oil pump, idler gear, flywheel, clutch, lifters, etc. pulled off, leaving just the bare block with its mains left.

Torque tube heading back to the transmission.

Another shot of the same. Lots of parts piled around. We cleaned that up pretty soon after this shot was taken.

Looking up the torque tube towards the transmission. Look at all that caked on oil!

Pulled the cover on the tranny. No surprise, lots of water had leaked in during pressure washing. It'll be nice to clean this out really good.

Final result of the day. Doesn't the area around it look cleaner now? Next week the plan is to get the belt pulley, floor pan, pedals, torque tube, wheels, and maybe the final drives off! Talk about a list. At that point though, we can start cleaning, fixing, painting, and reassembling! We're getting near the 1/2 way point now.

A special thanks to Jim and Judy Kitson, Gene Tucker, "Pops", and all the excellent folks at the Farmall Cub Message Board! It would still be frozen up in my garage if it wasn't for all you guys and gals!
